Job Description: Switchgear Engineer - Entry Level
Position Title: Switchgear Engineer I
Department: Engineering
Location: Cumming, GA
Reports To: Switchgear Engineering Manager
Position Summary
The Switchgear Engineer supports the design and integration of low-voltage, medium voltage switchgear, and generator/inverter paralleling equipment used in microgrids and distributed energy projects. The role works closely with senior engineers, project managers, and controls teams to develop drawings, configurations, and technical documentation that enable safe, reliable, and high-performance microgrid operations.
This position is ideal for early-career engineers looking to grow into power distribution, switchgear design, and microgrid controls integration.

Key Responsibilities
Switchgear Design
  • Assist in designing low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, and generator/inverter paralleling equipment for microgrid applications.
  • Develop or update single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and control schematics under supervision.
  • Support configuration of Bills of Material (BOMs), component selections, and equipment specifications including breakers, relays, PLC modules, metering, and communication hardware.
  • Learn and apply fundamentals of generator and inverter paralleling—synchronization, load sharing, soft loading, and protective relaying.
  • Support development of control logic, I/O lists, and communication architecture for microgrid operations such as islanding, resynchronization, load shedding, and black-start.
  • Collaborate with microgrid controls engineers to ensure switchgear designs align with system sequences of operation and dispatch strategies.
  • Assist in coordinating technical requirements with generator, inverter, and BESS vendors to ensure compatibility and proper integration.
Project Coordination & Technical Support
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, internal design reviews, and vendor coordination calls.
  • Support project managers by processing RFIs and assisting with technical questions under guidance of senior engineers.
  • Attend site walks (as needed) to understand field conditions, confirm equipment placements, and support BOM accuracy.
Documentation & Quality
  • Maintain drawing revisions, documentation standards, and organized engineering files.
  • Review vendor drawings to ensure consistency with project requirements and design intent.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Understanding of electrical power fundamentals (three-phase systems, breakers, relays, transformers, etc.).
  • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting tools.
  • Strong interest in low-voltage switchgear design, microgrids, and distributed energy.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
Preferred (Not Required)
  • Internship or co-op experience in power systems, construction, or electrical design.
  • Exposure to generator paralleling, DERs, inverters, or microgrid concepts.
  • Familiarity with NEC, UL 891/1558, IEEE 1547, or related standards.
  • Experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, or industrial communication protocols.

Key Skills
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits.
  • Eagerness to learn switchgear design, controls integration, and microgrid engineering.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and capable of handling multiple tasks.
