Switchgear Field Service Technician (Traveling)
Description
We are seeking experienced, independent, and reliable Field Service Technicians to support the installation, commissioning, testing, repair, & maintenance of our Microgrid Switchgear & Control Systems.
Job Requirements
5+ years of commercial/industrial experience working on diesel/natural gas generators, paralleling switchgear, and/or controllers.
50-70% overnight travel Monday thru Friday. Minimal weekend travel.
Conduct all business and social activities in a manner which reflects integrity and professional excellence.
Must be able to pass a physical, background check, and drug screen
Strong written and verbal English skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, Outlook email/calendars
OEM Training, certification and/or EGSA certification preferred
Responsibilities
Inspect, conduct field start-ups/commissioning, system modifications, and preventative maintenance, conduct operator training, and document all site visits on our Microgrid Switchgear & Control Systems. Experience w/Woodward Controls, Schweitzer Relays, & Electrically Operated Circuit Breakers is a plus.
Conduct wiring checks to verify control power distribution and component operation using proper test equipment. (0-125V-DC & 0-15kV-AC)
Be proficient in the use of all PLC, HMI, and other component software programs for proper setup, operation, troubleshooting and necessary programming modification.
Verify correct operation of control components including but not limited to PLC, HMI, metering, protective relays, circuit breakers, etc. per contract documents.
Verify correct operation of all communication circuits including but not limited to Ethernet (TCP/IP), RS232/485, Modbus, Modbus+, fiber, BACnet, customer SCADA systems, etc.
Work with third-party vendors as needed to verify operation of generators, BESS, Solar, ATS's, remote annunciators and other devices connected to paralleling system. Experience w/generators, BESS, Solar, & ATS’s a plus.
Manage onsite third-party vendors and activities to ensure efficient/successful startup/upgrade.
Maintain documentation, customer signoffs, trip reports, drawings, sequence of operation, component serial numbers, system setpoints, software/firmware versions, etc.
Understand functionality of all components within and connected to switchgear systems, including but not limited to generator/alternator, voltage regulators, generator controllers, automatic transfer switches, BESS, Solar, etc.
Understand how specific load types affect system performance.
Properly adjust generator speed and voltage biases for proper synchronizing, loading/unloading, and KW/kVar sharing.
Submit customer feedback to quality department to formally track product issues.
Provide feedback regarding design of switchgear systems, PLC and HMI programming, circuit design, sequence of operation, etc.
Understand scope of work prior to site visits. Review submittals & orders, system schematics, wiring diagrams, sequence of operation, component manuals, etc.
Manage costs related to onsite work, including but not limited to travel and expense.
Mentor in-coming associates to the department and provide feedback to others.
Update product and department procedures.
Understand governing codes related to industries where generator paralleling systems are installed (i.e. - NFPA110, etc.).
Complete day to day activities with little supervision.
Provide on call, emergency services as required.
Be aware and conscious of all safety factors revolving around circuits at high power levels. Must adhere to all company safety policies. Failure to do so can effect employment status.
Physical Demands
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Physical Activity: 85% physical activity required on customer site working with equipment, 15% form completion, email, other administrative tasks and completing technical support activities by way of telephone and computer communication.
Must be able to daily operate a service vehicle and drive for extended periods to reach customer’s locations.
May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (5-50 pounds).
Frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands, to touch, handle or grasp, reach with hands and arms.
Combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
Must have the physical ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to Protective Glasses, Protective Gloves, and Protective Footwear as required.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to read computer screens, paper documents, equipment.
Ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and hear others speaking.
May be required to work long and unpredictable hours.
